On 28 May 2015, "Ukrinform" Ukrainian National Information Agency hosted a press-conference on the subject: New drug-resistant TB treatment schemes based on cutting-edge drugs – hope of recovery for tens of thousands of patients in Ukraine and millions of patients worldwide.
The roundtable was organised by "Ukrainians Against TB" Public Movement" Foundation and F.G. Yanovsky Phthisiology and Pulmonology Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.
The aim of the roundtable was to raise to a new level awareness and interest of the media, general public and TB patients in promising ways to overcome "a plague of the 21st century" – drug-resistant TB.
The topics discussed at the roundtable:
1. Drug-resistant TB as a mortal challenge to the humankind.
2. Development of new TB treatment methods in the world as a response to the World Health Organisation's 1993 declaration about TB being a global threat. The WHO's "End TB" strategy.
3. Strong patients' commitment to treatment and new drugs are the two components of success in fighting drug-resistant TB.
Participants in the roundtable included representatives of the State Institution "F.G. Yanovsky Phthisiology and Pulmonology Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine", State Institution "Ukrainian Centre for Control of Socially Dangerous Diseases of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine", World Health Organisation, chief phthisiologists from Ukraine's regions and representatives of non-governmental organisations.
Reports on the main issues were presented by head of the chemoresistant TB division of the State Institution "F.G. Yanovsky Phthisiology and Pulmonology Institute of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine", doctor of medical sciences, professor Svitlana Cherenko and representative of the WHO's Country Office in Ukraine Yuliya Chystyakova.
